Mark Making and Abstract Composition Class

Saugatuck Douglas Art Club and the Saugatuck-Douglas District Library are excited to announce a free and open-to-the-public class on Mark Making and Abstract Composition. Taught by retired SHS art teacher, Christa Wise, this is an opportunity for art enthusiasts to delve into the Principles of Design as they apply to mixed media works.

In this engaging and interactive class, participants will explore the world of abstract mixed media composition, guided by Christa's extensive experience in teaching art. The class aims to inspire creativity and self-expression, encouraging individuals to embrace their favorite mediums, whether it be watercolor, tempera, gouache, or acrylic paint.

Class Details:

  • Location: Saugatuck-Douglas District Library
  • Day: Mondays, February 26 through April 1
  • Time: 9:30 - 11:30 AM
  • Admission: Free and open to the public
  • Class Size: Limited to 15 participants
  • Registration is required.

The Library will provide basic supplies. Each participant should bring a smock or apron. If you have favorite or preferred materials, you are encouraged to bring them with you.

  • Collage papers (old sketches, text, sheet music, B&W images)
  • Mark-making materials (Cray-Pas, pastel sticks, markers – optional but fun)
  • Scissors
  • Watercolor, tempera, gouache, or acrylic paint (bring your favorite medium)
  • Brushes of various sizes
  • Mixing palette (paper, plastic, or plastic plates - white is preferable)

Christa emphasizes that no prior experience is required—just a willingness to explore and create a cohesive composition. The class provides a supportive and inclusive environment for individuals to experiment with different artistic techniques.

"This class is an opportunity for everyone to tap into their artistic side, regardless of previous experience. I believe that art is for everyone, and I'm excited to guide participants in discovering the joy of abstract mixed media composition," says Christa.
