JAMES JOHNSON / Artist
I've been a visual artist now for 65 years. I grew up in Grand Rapids and was educated at
Kendall College of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. My career as a commercial
illustrator began in 1971 and lasted until 2000 when I retired and turned to watercolor
painting. I was flattered and surprised in 2010 when American Artist Magazine published a
feature article about me and my approach to landscape painting. In 2021 I was again
surprised when the Michigan Water Color Society inducted me as a signatory member. I've
had a long association with The Grand Valley Artist's in Grand Rapids and I'm presently the
GVA gallery director and facilitator of the Plein Air Group.
